Jupiter Academy urging you to join us on "World Population Day" 2010 World Population Day carries a different theme every year. In 2009, this was ‘Join the Anti-Poverty Movement – Educate Girls’ and emphasised the need to invest in women in developing countries to implement policies that bolstered womens roles in the economy, by investing in health, education and social services in order to increase national productivity and income. Activities took place across the globe to help spread this important message ranging from conferences, seminars, debates and poster competitions to artistic and cultural events within communities. Population Growth… And CountingAt 3rd March 2010, according to the United States Census Bureau, the world population was at 6,806,100,000. This represents an increase that has been climbing ever since the Black Death in 1400, with a spurt of unprecedented growth taking place in the 1950s - then over longer periods during the 1960s and 1970s. Although the birth rate has now levelled off, having peaked at 163 million in the late 1990s, it is still at a rate of 134 million per year, against a death rate of 57 million per year. World Population Day – 11th July 2010On 11th July 1987, when the world’s population reached five billion, the United Nations marked the day with a special day of celebration known as The Day of Five Billion. The public response to the event was so positive that the Governing Council of the United Nations Development was prompted to set up World Population Day – held annually on 11th July – to create public awareness of the growth in global human population, as well as to highlight issues relating to overpopulation that may threaten the ecosystem. Since then we have seen: Finite Resources and Infinite IssuesThis means that by 2040, the world’s population is expected to reach nine billion. Whilst the population is growing, the shared resources are finite. With the over consumption of the industrialized nations eating up natural resources at a frightening rate – juxtaposed against the problems created by poverty, malnourishment and crowding in less developed countries – issues of overpopulation need to be tackled by world governments before it becomes too late.
